I have heard those seven words, throughout my life I have heard those seven words, throughout my life. The End Of The World Is Coming... In 1962 I was in primary school and adults were whispering, we shall all die soon.  As a 7 year old,  I was so terrified that for the entire week, slept under the bed where my parents scooped me out, each night.

America had just threatened to drop an atomic bomb on Cuba. Just like President Trump has been promising to “annihilate Iran” -  in 2026. Subsequently , as you can see,  almost 70 years later, talk of our planet's demise is “vivant,”  as the French say.

Last month, Jacob Coxon, a researcher at America's Anthropic,  resigned and cautioned  Artificial Intelligence (AI) could wipe us by 2030. According to Coxon, we have only four years left!

AI is everywhere, suddenly. You do not know what is real; or lies. Two prominent individuals have equally warned about AI. Stephen Hawking the gifted, disabled, British scientist (who died 2018) once said “development of artificial intelligence could spell the end of human race if not properly managed.”
Two weeks ago, Microsoft founder, Bill Gates , warned of billion deaths caused by AI if “left unchecked”...
Some call this -scaremongering.

When you chat to average Londoners you get extreme views.
A homeless guy at the pub joked: “AI can easily hold us ransom by jamming electricity...can't cook, can't communicate; can't do anything. A slow agonising death. How do you live without electricity?”

Religious guys issuing pamphlets across London's travel stations, tend to shout something like: “The end of the world coming. There is only one saviour. Jesus is coming to save us. Turn to him fast!”

Was watching the famous internet behaviour expert Joe Navarro who declared AI can do many things but not human relationships (i.e. friendships, family, etc.) !
Where does Africa stand?

Arusha businessman and philanthropist, Mr Walter M Arusha businessman and philanthropist, Mr Walter Maeda, celebrated his 72nd birthday with 27 children at Nkoaranga Orphanage Centre on October 3, 2026 -  encouraging Tanzanians to use personal celebrations to support those in need.

Accompanied by his family and friends, Mr Maeda visited the centre in Tengeru  on the outskirts of Arusha, where the children blew up balloons, played football and enjoyed games with the visitors. The celebration included sharing a birthday cake and planting fruit trees.
“As we celebrate another year of life, let us also think about whose life we can make better,” Mr Maeda said.
He said spending his birthday with the children had brought him immense happiness and urged others to devote more of their celebration budgets to causes that support people in need.

Birthdays and other milestones, he said, offered an opportunity to spread joy beyond family and friends while making a meaningful contribution to the wider community.
His family took part in the activities and supported his call to make giving part of personal celebrations.

The centre’s matron, Ms Anna Akyoo, welcomed the gesture, saying such occasions brought joy to children in care.
“Sometimes, so much is spent on celebrations at expensive venues, yet less than a third of that amount could touch the hearts of these children,” she said.

Ms Anna thanked Maeda family for remembering the children and encouraged others to follow their example.
Through games, shared cake and tree planting, Mr Maeda and his family turned a personal milestone into a joyful occasion for the children.

When a mother dies during childbirth, her newborn When a mother dies during childbirth, her newborn still needs to be fed, washed, comforted and held. While a family grieves, the baby’s need for care continues.

At Nkoaranga Orphanage Centre in Arusha, that responsibility falls to the caregivers affectionately known as the Mamas.
The orphanage’s history is closely linked to missionary work and the care of vulnerable infants. German missionaries are credited with its early beginnings in the 1930s. The need it serves is clear: Babies whose mothers die during childbirth or whose families cannot provide the care they require, need somewhere safe to grow. Attached to Nkoaranga Lutheran Hospital, the centre receives children from the hospital and the wider Arusha area.

Its present building was constructed in August 1997 with support from the German organisation overseen by Mama Ursula.

Some children arrive after their mothers die during childbirth. Others have been abandoned, says the centre’s longstanding matron, Ms Anna Akyoo. Their circumstances differ, but each needs someone to respond to their cries and provide consistent care.

For the centre, meeting those immediate needs is only part of the work. As children grow, staff must also consider where they can safely live and who can care for them.
“Many still have fathers or other relatives,” Ms Anna says.
Her words highlight an important distinction: A child living in an orphanage does not necessarily have no family. Ms Anna says maintaining family relationships and helping children return to relatives, where possible, are central to the centre’s work.

Most people know Jane Goodall through forests, chi Most people know Jane Goodall through forests, chimpanzees and conservation. I remember something quieter, her humility.
When I had the privilege of reciting my poem about her life’s journey before her, the moment felt deeply personal. I was standing before a woman whose name had travelled across continents, yet there was nothing distant about her presence. She listened with complete attention. There was no impatience, no sense that she had heard too many speeches or met too many admirers. For those few moments, she made me feel that my words mattered.

When I finished, she looked at me with moist eyes. She smiled, reached out, shook my hand warmly and simply said, “Thank you.” There was no grand response and perhaps that is why I remember it so clearly. Her simplicity carried more meaning than elaborate praise ever could.

My son, too, had the privilege of meeting her. Watching him stand before someone whose life had been devoted to protecting other living beings gave the encounter another layer of meaning for me. It became more than a meeting with a famous person. It became a memory shared across generations.

What stayed with me afterwards was not only Jane Goodall the scientist or conservationist, but Jane Goodall the human being. Fame had not hardened her. Achievement had not made her inaccessible.
I also saw the discipline behind her extraordinary life. Even in old age, she continued travelling, speaking, working and advocating.

Retirement seemed absent from her vocabulary because her work was not just a profession, it was a lifelong calling.
Jane chose a life very different from the glittering one the modern world glorifies. While others chase glass towers, parties and comfort, she had once chosen forests, animals, solitude and sacrifice.

Through initiatives such as Roots & Shoots, that devotion grew into something larger than herself.
Perhaps that was her rarest lesson. A meaningful life does not need constant applause.
