Uterine fibroids are a common health condition affecting many women during their reproductive years. Despite how common they are, fibroids are often misunderstood and surrounded by fear and misinformation.

Fibroids are non-cancerous growths that develop in or around the uterus (womb). They are made of muscle and fibrous tissue and can vary greatly in size. Some are as small as a seed, while others can grow large enough to enlarge the abdomen. A woman may have one fibroid or multiple fibroids at the same time.

Fibroids are more common in women between the ages of 30 and 50 and may also run in families.

Some women with fibroids have no symptoms at all and only discover them during a routine medical examination or ultrasound. However, others may experience symptoms and common symptoms include heavy or prolonged menstrual bleeding, pelvic pain or pressure, abdominal swelling and lower back pain, among others.

Treatment depends on the size, location, symptoms, age of the patient and future pregnancy plans. Small fibroids without symptoms may only need regular monitoring.

For symptomatic fibroids, treatment options may include medications to control bleeding and pain, hormonal therapy, minimally invasive procedures, or surgery when necessary.

Women should avoid relying solely on unverified herbal remedies or delaying medical care due to fear. Early assessment by a healthcare professional allows proper diagnosis and discussion of the best treatment options.
